Welcome to my blog, My name is Shaondel Hall I currently in my senior semester at St. John's University in Queens New York, New York. I tranfered to St. John's in my quest to be just like my big sister Shaniece! Ever since I was little she was my biggest role model. I grew up telling her "I wanna be just like you, but in my own way!" So, I did just that, I tried to play all the sports she did growing up even wearing her same number! The only thing was I never thought I was as smart as her, she pulled all A's in high school where I struggled to get B. That was hard for me understand, how she just got things and I had to work a lot harder. Thats why when it came down to where would I go to college I had a feeling to stay away from trying to apply to the big schools that she did, like Syracuse University and St. John's University. I simply thought I would never get in. Out of college I applied to 7 SUNY schools and a private college that my grandmother went to named Nazareth College. I ended up choosing Nazareth College I went and found myself hatting every moment that I was there. I couldn't figure out what I wanted to so I changed my major 5 time in the first semester. I also found it very hard to find and keep friends making me want to leave college I just didn't see what the point f going was. So I didn't, I stooped going to classes, nothing was fun for me the classes where boring my professors and I had huge disconnects and I couldn't engage it was hard to find motivation. That is when I turn in my request to drop out of school. It was rejected, and I couldn't understand why this school wouldn't let me just go, putting me out of my misery. My freshman advisor got the request and called me to his office, he sat my down and told I was to bright and he knew the potential that was inside me, thats when he suggest that I change my major to undeclared with a dance minor. That made things much better but at the end of the spring 2015 semester I felt it was time to try something new. My best from home had just finished her first year in National Guard and we decided so try and go to our local community college together. So I packed up my dorm went home for the summer and went on the apartment search to move in with my best friend. Little did we know thats was going to be one the best decisions of our lives we ended renting out a sweet lake house and started school as pre-nursing majors, on the women's soccer team. I ended up changing my major again after the first semester to marketing and I had finally found something that had excited me.

We needed another roommate and ended up calling ourselves "the 4050 girls", in reference of our address. Living in the house with the two of them was blast! They helped me move past all the rough patches that I had my freshman year of school. We all went on the graduate form Finger Lakes Community College on 2017. I finished with an Associate degree in Marketing. This was when it was time to figure out what my next step would be. At this time I was confident enough to apply to both of the schools that I didn't think I was smart enough to get into. Even after applying to St. John's it still felt like a far stretch until I got the phone call, i was sure it was prank call from one of my friends, but it wasn't I was accepted! I had finally done something that I felt wasn't possible for myself. Now, I have been here for a year and a half and I have the pleasure of calling myself a Red Storm cheerleader. Knowing that my road to graduation is coming to an end again its time to take that next step once again. I am hoping to move in with my love after graduation. So far the plan is for him to move to New York City or for us back home together. This all depends on me taking a gap year before going off to grad school or trying to work my way up from my assistant position to a stylist at my job. This saying in the next three years I will be my transitioning years to being more of an independent adult within my personal, and professional life. I've been a lot of places and taking a lot of different routes to get to where I am today and I have a feeling that is how my future will go as well.

How to make a classroom more than just a classroom.

On the first day of class my professor said to the class that we were able to help plan out what we would be doing in class this semester. Thats when the idea of all things I've ever wanted to do in a college class came into mind. First, I thought about test and quizzes, I feel like they are essential to class but I would rather have open note test online. I feel this way because I have to know the content and understand where it in my resources, rather than trying to cram it into my brain. Next, I thought about how class should be broken up, I find it very effect to have "brain breaks," especially because our class is three hours long, it often times can be very draining have content feed to you through lectures in that amount of time. These breaks can 5 minutes every hour or a 15 to 20 minute break in the middle of class. I also think we should have open discussions about anything that relates to lecture or business at the beginning of class to break the ice before diving into lectures. Now take into considerations how our class is scheduled during lunch time. I know I don't do anything well when I'm hungry. One of my classmates mentioned having a pizza party, why not have a food party each class. I think it would be neat to have our small groups bring lunch for each week when assigned. It can be whatever you want: snacks, pizza, coffee and donuts, or chicken wings, as long as it is not something anyone in the class is allergic to. Guest speakers were also something that could be fun. I think it would be neat to have St. John's Alumni come in to speak to our class about their lives during and after St. Johns and how they got to where they are today in their industry. One Alumni that I would personally like to have come into our class is head coach Chris Mullen, I would love to hear how he went from St. Johns, to the NBA (National Basketball Association), and back and what he thinks about himself being a brand and how he managed that though out the years. We often think of brands as the goods and services we use each day but people can be their own brands too. I feel it would be neat to hear him talk about himself as a brand and the challenges he faces by surrounding himself in a profession where everyone is a brand. How he had to compete with bigger brands like Micheal Jordan and Mark Jackson to stay relevant trough-out the years. I also like the idea of not having class in our set locations when it is applicable. I think it would be cool to have a class outside on a nice day. Or have a class in the 3D lab and see how this new technology will play in the world of business. It would also be fun to have a class where we talk about photography and maybe go to a graphics lab. We could take a trip to Time Square and talk about different types of advertisements we see and how Time Square became the place it did. It would also be cool to go to Viacom and talk about creating and innovating for mass media. Maidson square garden is also in our back yead and is the "Most famous arena" it would be interesting to go these and see how they have thrived off of the entertainment and sports industries to stay current and maintain the reputation that they have build as well. Another thing we could do is take a field trips to marketing and adverting business and being able to shadow different type of jobs there as well. Lastly, I think it would be great to have a host of different Workshops every few classes. These workshops can be on: social media content, coding, photoshop, photography, making and editing videos, graphic design, how to think quickly and critically on the spot, copyrighting, creating tagline and slogans, logos, personal brands, and how to deliver a pitch. keeping the classroom and fun open space would be nice for a change, especially for those who learn differently or struggle in the traditional classroom setting.
